April 2, 2025 UMD Home FabLab AIMLab

This is to share sad news of the passing of Dr. Jim O'Connor on Feb 3. He was recruited to the NanoCenter as the first Director of the FabLab in 2004. With his retirement a few years ago, some of you didn't know him, but we all benefit from the foresight, technical skill, and management delicacy he practiced in his position. Jim started with a pretty much empty FabLab, recruited nearly all the current staff, and within a year had the place humming along, providing research infrastructure support among the best in universities. Jim was a delight to work with and is largely responsible for the supportive attitude that students and users enjoy from the staff every day.
