The December 12th issue of Nature ranked the University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) 12th among U.S. public-university MSE departments, 18th out of all U.S. universities and 66th worldwide. 

In this same issue, MSE Ph.D. Student, Emily Hitz, was named one of five emerging scientists in the field of materials science. In addition to Hitz's achievement, several other MSE students have been honored in the last few months:

  • Adam Pranda (Ph.D. student), 2019 John Coburn and Harold Winters Student Award in Plasma Science and Technology
  • Jacob Garnett (junior) was the first to open the Lockheed Martin Challenge Box at UMD - it took him less than 25 minutes
  • Adelaide Nolan (grad student), 2019 recipient of the Engie North America Chuck Edwards Memorial Fellowship
  • Naila Al Hasan (Ph.D. student), 2019 MRS Graduate Student Silver Award
  • Joy Chao and Zoey Warecki (Ph.D. students), won second place in SciVid 2019, "ConTEMplating Atomic Resolution," during MRS 2019 Fall Meeting
  • John Howard (grad student), 2019 MRS Fall Meeting Best Poster Award

Additional MSE stats include:

  • 12 publications in Science and Nature (5 total in 2018 and 2019)
  • Science cover (2018), Nature cover (2019) and 42 covers of other journals
  • 43 issued US patents at UMD and 101 issued US patents at other entities
  • 18 fellows of professional societies
  • $0.8M in average research expenditures per faculty member in 2019
  • 4 startup companies
  • 18th in Nature Index ranking among U.S. university MSE departments
