The Winter 2009 issue of Micro Manufacturing is devoted to new directions in micro-electro mechanical (MEMS) research and includes a nice two-page article on the micro-ball bearing/micro turbine work of ISR Director and Herbert Rabin Distinguished Professor Reza Ghodssi (ECE/ISR) and his team.

The article reviews the 15-year quest for micro engines that could provide electrical power for an individual?s needs, starting with Dr. Alan Epstein?s original idea and work at MIT. Much of the story covers recent contributions in this area by the MEMS Sensors and Actuators Laboratory under Dr. Ghodssi?s direction.
