MAMNA Virtual Seminar: Ashley Chapin, UMD, Hybrid platform for in-situ gut-brain-axis monitoring Hybrid platform development for in-situ monitoring of the gut-brain-axis Ashley Chapin Ashley Chapin is a Bioengineering Ph.D. candidate working under the advisement of Prof. Reza Ghodssi and Prof. William Bentley at the University of Maryland. The gut-brain-axis is a strong neural communication pathway between the gut and the brain, in which serotonin plays a main role in communicating gastrointestinal conditions to the nervous system. In this seminar, Ashley will discuss her recent work developing a 3D-printed platform with integrated sensors for monitoring an in vitro model of the gut-brain-axis. Electrochemical sensors fabricated within the platform are characterized for their sensitivity to serotonin and physical cell coverage, providing a measure of gut cell behavior with superior access to cellular information than would be possible in vivo.
