Prof. Song-Yul Choe

Dr. Song-Yul Choe, endowed professor at Auburn University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, presented a seminar at CALCE on “Advanced Experimental Characterization of Heat Generation Rates of Lithium Ion Batteries” on Monday, November 10, 2025, attended by UMD faculty, researchers, and students. The talk delved into the pressing challenges and recent advances in battery thermal management for high-efficiency, reliable energy systems.

Dr. Choe’s presentation examined how temperature, commonly used as a design reference in battery systems, can result in imprecise and oversized cooling solutions. He discussed the limitations of commercial equipment for operando heat generation measurement, highlighting their struggles to handle cell size, accuracy, and variable operating conditions. Dr. Choe showcased his team’s innovative calorimeter, which employs thermoelectric assemblies (TEA) to directly measure battery heat generation rates as functions of C-rate, state of charge (SOC), and temperature. The calorimeter also acts as a thermostat to maintain reference temperatures and enables the isolation of key thermal parameters, such as the entropy coefficient, which is central to understanding reversible heat generation.

During his visit, Prof. Choe met with the mechanical engineering leadership and CALCE faculty to explore potential future collaborations. He also interacted with graduate students focused on battery safety and thermal runaway, providing valuable and constructive feedback on their research methodologies.
